Smog in Lahore: Green lockdown ‘fails’ as SOPs violated

MNP – Amidst worsening smog conditions in Lahore, the government’s recently implemented “Green Lockdown” appears to be falling short as pollution levels remain dangerously high and public compliance with safety measures lags.

The Green Lockdown was intended to reduce vehicular pollution in key areas, including Davies Road, Egerton Road, Durand Road, and Kashmir Road, but on-the-ground conditions reveal significant violations of the restrictions.

Reports indicate that despite restrictions, Chinchi rickshaws and other smoke-emitting vehicles are actively plying the roads.

Many pedestrians on Davies Road are seen without masks, ignoring recommended safety measures aimed at reducing smog-related health risks.

The government’s directives, which included strict enforcement of emissions controls and public compliance with SOPs, appear to be largely disregarded.

“The government’s commitment to tackling the pollution crisis seems limited to announcements, with real action lagging behind,” Naqvi reported. SOP violations, lack of mask usage, and unchecked vehicle emissions continue to exacerbate the city’s air quality crisis.
