One Week to Go to the 2023 European Athletics Congress
Switzerland (MNP) The 28th Congress – excluding extraordinary congresses – since the formation of European Athletics in 1970 is an ‘Election Congress’ which will see elections for the European Athletics President, three Vice Presidents and 13 Council Members.A list of candidates for all these positions as well as their CVs can be found here. The elections will see European Athletics take further steps towards ensuring a gender balance in these important roles as constitutional changes mean that two people of each gender will occupy the combined positions of President and Vice President while a minimum of five people of each gender will be elected as Council members. However, the Congress – the General Assembly of the European Athletics Member Federations and overall supreme authority – will see many other important decisions made which will determine the future direction of the sport in Europe.Thirteen proposals for changes to the European Athletics Constitution will be presented to the Congress, including proposed changes to strengthen safeguarding. The Congress will also consider the recommendations of a working group that investigated how to integrate human rights requirements into the bidding process and regulations of European Athletics events.Details of the 2025 European Running Championships, an exciting new addition to the European Athletics events calendar subject to Congress approval, will be unveiled in the Serbian capital while the Member Federations will also be given an update on the progress of the Rome 2024 European Athletics Championships.A comprehensive report from the current European Athletics Council of the work undertaken by the sport’s continental governing body since the last Congress in October 2021 will be given while budgets for the next four-year period will be presented. In addition, various long-standing servants of the sport will be honoured with the awarding of the European Athletics Golden Pin and Plaque of Merit.
