WELLINGTON CLINGS TO GILLETTE VENUS U19 LEAD AHEAD OF DECISIVE ROUND
NewZealand (MNP) first national title of 2022/23 will be decided tomorrow when the last round of the Gillette Venus Women’s Under 19 Nationals gets underway at 10am.
After a day of T20 upsets in Lincoln, Wellington is in the box seat and in control of their own destiny, holding a slender one-point lead heading into the final T20 round tomorrow.
Each win is worth three points, and breathing down their neck is defending champion Central Districts who won both their T20 matches today to jump from fourth to second spot on the table. Their 19-run victory against Wellington this afternoon prevented Wellington from taking the title with a round to spare.
Auckland is also on 16 points (with CD) and could have taken the outright lead had they managed to hit a six off the last ball of their afternoon clash with Otago – a team they had already beaten once today, in the morning’s fifth round.
However, after conceding 10 from her last over, Isabel Parry dotted down with her final ball to win the thriller for the out-of-contention southerners.
Northern Districts is also already out of the running, but scored a big first win this afternoon when they defeated Canterbury, the early frontrunners and hosts stumbling to their third consecutive loss, stalled on 14 points.
Tomorrow’s decisive final round begins at 10am, and pits Wellington against Northern Districts; Central Districts against Otago; and Canterbury against Auckland in three loaded contests.
